Morecambe Bay Woodfuel and Wildlife Project

TEP assessed the woodfuel potential of under-managed woodlands of the Morecambe Bay area. TEP identified suppliers, potential markets and potential woodfuel energy available.

The project aimed to generate rural employment and simultaneously bring habitat improvements for the high brown fritillary butterfly whose last stronghold in England is Morecambe Bay. The area is also a RSPB enhancement target for woodland birds. The study identified woodlands with the greatest energy potential, including an assessment of their accessibility for timber extraction and marketing, important in this Rural Development Area.

The work was carried out for the Forestry Commission, with Natural England and Butterfly Conservation.
