TEP is the ecological and landscape consultant for the restoration and redevelopment of the former coking works at The Avenue in Chesterfield.
In 1999 grass snakes were discovered during site investigations. Detailed surveys involving corrugated tin refuges showed that snakes were widespread.
TEP have cleared grass snakes from the main site ahead of its decontamination. Clearance took over 12 months and was implemented alongside a newt trapping scheme licensed by Natural England.
TEP designed and implemented a 16 hectare nature reserve called “The Washlands” – this was used as a receptor site, and is now managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.
In 2008, the scheme won best practice awards from the Landscape Institute and the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management
