TEP was commissioned by Rother District Council to develop proposals for the former Bexhill High School site east of Bexhill Down.
The proposal is to create a new multi-functional site including a leisure centre and residential area that would bring new life to this area of Bexhill.
The proposals for ‘Destination Leisure’ aim to transform the site generating numerous
benefits for the whole community. The proposals provide:
- A new leisure centre, comprising a mix of modern purpose built facilities for the whole community; including swimming pools, sports hall and gym;
- Residential development;
- Car parking to serve the site;
- Improved access throughout, including a new footpath cycleway connection to Bexhill Down, the town centre and wider surroundings; and
- A high quality gateway to the town.
This site has long been allocated for mixed-use development in the development strategy for Rother District. The existing Leisure Centre on the site is now 28 years old, and is reaching the end of its lifespan. A new leisure facility in a single statement building will provide flexibility and balance between leisure and formal sports encouraging the community in the pursuit of healthy, active lifestyles.
The proposed scheme seeks to help fund this statement leisure centre through delivering much needed housing. The site provides a gateway to the town centre and offers good connectivity to the wide range of existing local services.
