Brent Council is midway through a fifteen year regeneration scheme which will deliver high-quality affordable homes, open spaces and new public realm in South Kilburn. The fourth phase of this scheme, on which TEP has been appointed alongside Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects, is now underway, with over 1000 of the planned total of 2400 homes completed to date.
TEP has provided landscape design, ecology and heritage services to support a full planning application for this new residential development. The design proposals take inspiration from the nineteenth century vernacular of its neighbourhood. It also fits seamlessly into a wider network of public open space being fostered in the borough.
The landscape proposition is guided by the vision of a tranquil oasis in a densely-populated area of the capital. It comprises two communal courtyards designed in close consultation with the local community. They contain doorstep play features, informal seating and measures to improve the site’s ecological value; including biodiverse planting and the incorporation of insect hotels, bird feeders and bird baths.
These two courtyards are intersected by Neville Road, a new shared surface space more akin to a public square than a typical street. Residents will able to use the space as a place to socialise and host community events – there will be seating, opportunities for children’s play, tree planting and bike storage.
